INDEPENDENCE, Ore. (AP) – A motorcycle rider was thrown through the windshield of a pickup truck in a collision near Independence yesterday. State Police say the truck driver was killed and the motorcycle rider is expected to survive. KATU reports troopers say Billy Austin of Monmouth was making a left turn in his pickup truck when it collided with a motorcycle ridden by Bradley Mosey of Independence. Troopers said Mosey’s helmet and safety gear helped him survive.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Authorities believe a medical condition caused a Salem man to collapse while hiking with his family at Silver Falls State Park. State Police say 66-year-old Richard Proksch was unresponsive Saturday when a ranger and medics tried to revive him. The Statesman Journal reports he was pronounced dead at the scene.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Officially, Oregon remains free of Japanese beetle, an invasive species that has been spreading across the country, feeding on turf, fruit trees, berries and hops. But 32 of the insects were trapped last year near the Portland International Airport and eight this year. State insect pest prevention experts suspect the beetles grew up in Oregon. The Oregonian reports the airport is a battleground because beetles are believed to catch a ride on shipments from infested states.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon death row inmate Mark Pinnell is seeking clemency from Gov. John Kitzhaber after more than two decades in prison. The Oregonian reports he’s the first person to ask for clemency since the governor declared a moratorium on executions in 2011. Pinnell argues he should be released because he was treated differently from his co-defendant in the 1985 murder-robbery of John Wallace Ruffner.
