PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Central Oregon has expanded into a forested upland, complicating the battle against the week-old blaze. The growth of the Sunnyside Turnoff fire has slowed – it’s now estimated at 74 square miles. But the projected date for containing it has been pushed back from Sunday to next Thursday.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Beaverton after he allegedly tried to rob a gun shop using a baseball bat. KGW-TV reports Sgt. Bob Ray said the man entered the store yesterday, smashed a display case and grabbed a gun. The manager then came out from the back of the store with a gun and ordered the intruder, Derrick Mosley, to the ground.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber has signed a bill he hopes will curb the state’s prison population. Among other things, the measure signed yesterday reduces sentences for certain drug and property crimes and driving with a suspended license. It’s projected to keep the prison population flat for about five years.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland regional transit agency TriMet says the 7.3-mile Orange Line running between downtown Portland and Milwaukie is 50 percent complete, and is projected to open on Sept. 12, 2015. The almost $1.5 billion project includes a bridge across the Willamette River that will be off-limits to cars. TriMet says the project has created more than 6,800 direct and indirect jobs, including 2,435 in construction.
