PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police dispersed protesters aligned with the 2011 Occupy movement who were camped out in front of Portland City Hall yesterday morning, five days after city workers hung eviction notices from nearby trees. The encampment made up of a largely homeless population began after police ordered the removal of tents and other structures from the 300-person Occupy Portland encampment in late 2011. The City Hall protest sought to focus attention on Portland’s homeless population.
ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) – The body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in the Snake River while fishing with two friends has been recovered. The Ontario Argus Observer reports that officers found his body Tuesday near the railroad trestle where he fell in on Sunday. Sheriff Brian Wolfe said one of the boys jumped into the river to help the struggling teenager, but couldn’t.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 44-year-old Oregon woman who was convicted of eight bank robberies a decade ago has been sentenced to prison for another four robberies. The U.S. attorney’s office says Lorinda Marie Goodin has been sentenced to 22 years and 11 months in prison as part of a plea deal. Two of the robberies were in Lane County; two were in Multnomah County.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Salem’s traffic engineer has turned down a proposal to erect a statue of a bloodied, bandaged chicken on crutches at the site where a commercial truck hauling more than 5,000 live chickens crashed July 9. The Oregonian says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals asked the city for permission to erect a 5-foot-5-inch chicken statue at the site. Traffic engineer Kevin Hottman says he and state transportation officials agreed the statue would be a distraction and possibly a hazard.
