PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A new central Oregon wildfire that quickly grew to cover half a square mile has prompted the evacuation of about 120 homes in several subdivisions. A fire spokeswoman says the Stagecoach Fire started yesterday afternoon northeast of Gilchrist. About 35 firefighters were battling that fire, which was about 10 percent contained by last night. Meantime, a fire that’s burned 31 to 39 square miles on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation is estimated to be 20 percent contained.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Multnomah County sheriff’s spokesman says a body found in the north Portland harbor has been identified as a Clark County, Wash., work release escapee. Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Matsushima said yesterday that the body recovered Sunday was that of 27-year-old Drake Edward Johnson. Authorities say Johnson escaped from work release last Wednesday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland mayor Charlie Hales has announced a plan to evict protesters from an encampment in front of City Hall that began in 2011 during the Occupy Portland movement. Hales says crime and litter at the encampment forced his hand. Protesters reacted with dismay to the news. The city posted eviction notices on Friday.

MITCHELL, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a 75-year-old man who led a state trooper on a 40-mile, high-speed chase has been arrested near his central Oregon home. Lt. Gregg Hastings said yesterday that Kenneth Norman Cook was arrested for investigation of felony attempt to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering and for driving with a suspended license.
