SISTERS, Ore. (AP) – A central Oregon search and rescue coordinator says a hiker who fell while descending from the summit of South Sister has been rescued. Deschutes County sheriff’s Lt. Scott Shelton says 33-year-old Oliver Austin was taken to a hospital in Bend with head injuries yesterday. He says Austin fell 10-20 feet and was briefly knocked unconscious.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A former Oregon corrections guard lost her gender-discrimination suit against the state but shouldn’t have to pay its attorney’s fees. The Oregon Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that an Eastern Oregon judge erred when he ordered Ronda Park to pay $30,000 in fees because he felt her claims were untruthful. The court said such a penalty could have a chilling effect on other litigants who fear suing.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a transit bus driver was stabbed yesterday afternoon after leaving an employee restroom at a southeast Portland light rail station. The Oregonian reports the driver suffered multiple stab wounds and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. A TriMet spokeswoman said transients are likely behind the assault, as well as another one in April.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A newspaper investigation shows Oregon’s former chief education officer tried to get the state to pay for travel expenses and perks such as first-class plane tickets. The Oregonian reported yesterday on Rudy Crew’s spending while under Gov. John Kitzhaber’s office. Crew, who resigned in June, charged for expenses such as $1,100 for a daylong trip to Santa Fe.
