SEATTLE (AP) – David Ortiz became baseball’s all-time leader in hits as a designated hitter and hit a two-run homer an inning later, leading the Boston Red Sox to an 11-4 win over the Seattle Mariners last night. Ortiz collected his eighth hit of the series with a two-run homer off Seattle starter Aaron Harang, his 19th this season. Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, currently the best in baseball, and the Red Sox knocked around Harang for seven runs and eight hits.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers formally signed free agent small forward Dorell Wright and acquired center Robin Lopez in trades, sealing two of several deals the team struck last week. The Blazers got Lopez in a three-team trade with New Orleans.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired second-year forward Thomas Robinson in a trade with the Houston Rockets. The two teams agreed to the deal last week, but it could not be completed until yesterday under NBA rules. Portland traded the rights to Kostas Papnikolaou and Marko Todorovic, and two future second-round picks, to the Rockets in exchange for Robinson.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland will host the 2014 Major League Soccer All-Star game. MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson and Portland Mayor Charlie Hales announced the event at Jeld-Wen Field yesterday. The MLS opponent for the match in Portland will be announced at a later date.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – The Phoenix Coyotes have hired former Vancouver Canucks assistant coach Newell Brown to serve on Dave Tippett’s staff. He replaces John Anderson, who didn’t return after two years with the Coyotes. The 51-year-old Brown spent the past three seasons with Vancouver, helping lead the Canucks to the Presidents’ Trophy in consecutive seasons and a trip to the 2011 Stanley Cup finals.
