SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A firefighter is injured after a three-alarm fire overnight at a Salem woodshop. Deputy Fire Marshal John Stroebel told the Statesman Journal the firefighter was taken to Salem Hospital, but the extent of the injuries was not known. The fire at Elite Cabinets Plus was upgraded to three alarms because of the amount of flames and smoke that enveloped the older building. The roof collapsed. Stroebel says fire hoses were stretched down the block because the shop is a distance away from hydrants.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a motorcycle rider was killed in a crash early today in southeast Portland. The rider died at the scene about 2:40 a.m. at Southeast Milwaukie Avenue, south of McLoughlin Boulevard.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene activists want to put an initiative on the ballot in May 2014 to ban genetically modified crops in Lane County. The Support Local Food Rights group filed an initial petition yesterday with the county clerk. The Register-Guard reports the measure is broader than a proposed ban that has qualified for the ballot in Jackson County. The Eugene group wants a local food “bill of rights” to supplant state or federal law and the rights of any agricultural corporation.
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A 23-year-old Vancouver woman has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for her role in kidnapping, robbing and shooting an Oregon man. Joanna Speaks pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and tampering with a witness in a deal with prosecutors. Her lawyer said her boyfriend had forced her to take part in the Nov. 28 attack on Freddie Landstrom. The Columbian reports she had met him previously in Milwaukie and invited him to her apartment where her boyfriend then held him at gunpoint.
