PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A public memorial service has been scheduled Saturday for John Percin Jr., a West Linn High School graduate who was among 19 firefighters who died in an Arizona wildfire. The Tualatin Valley fire department says it will be at 1 p.m. at Rolling Hills Community Church. A procession is planned this morning to accompany Percin’s remains and his family from Portland International Airport to the main fire station in Lake Oswego.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A federal court in Eugene has set Nov. 12 to hear the lawsuit of a former University of Oregon graduate student who accuses the university of gender bias. Monica Emeldi says she was blocked from earning a doctoral degree in retaliation for expressing her belief that faculty in the College of Education was biased against women. The university denies the claim and says professors declined to advance her five years ago because of her academic record.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Hundreds of people attended hearings yesterday in Hermiston and Portland on a proposal for a coal transfer terminal on the Columbia River at Boardman. State officials will consider the public comments as it reviews an application from Ambre Energy to move nearly 9 million tons of coal a year. Supporters expect jobs and economic benefits. Opponents fear health and environmental risks.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber says he’s not done with his fight for more substantial savings in the state pension system. The governor says he’ll hit the road and travel to places with the most financially struggling school districts in an effort to round up support for a special legislative session.
