ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) – Two swimmers are safe after being rescued by Columbia County sheriffs’ deputies and firefighters from the Columbia River near Sand Island. Witnesses reported seeing the two St. Helens men in distress yesterday afternoon. Sheriff Jeff Dickerson says 24-year-old Kawai Niau declined medical attention but 19-year-old Kyle Snider was hospitalized in stable condition.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police have identified a woman fatally injured when she was hit by a school bus as she crossed a street with her husband. Sgt. Pete Simpson says 41-year-old Renee Jean Bates was struck yesterday by a bus that was carrying two children. Both were uninjured. Police say the driver is cooperating with investigators and wasn’t impaired.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police say a commercial tractor-trailer rig hauling about 5,400 live chickens for Foster Farms overturned yesterday in downtown Salem, spilling birds into the street. Police Lt. Dave Okada said “a considerable number” of chickens died in the crash and many others appeared to have died during a nearly six-hour cleanup. The Salem Statesman Journal reported the driver was taken to a hospital for observation.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Lawn chair balloonist Kent Couch says that between the high price of helium and a fine from the Federal Aviation Administration, his flying days may be grounded. The Bend, Ore., gas station owner said yesterday that helium costs five times what it did when he made his first flight in 2006. However, Couch isn’t ruling out another flight outside the U.S.
