PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say three men who witnessed a stabbing in downtown Portland yesterday chased down the suspect and held him until officers arrived. Officers arrested the 26-year-old man and booked him into the Multnomah County Jail on an attempted murder charge. The victim is the man’s 27-year-old ex-girlfriend. She was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Legislature has passed a bill to allow struggling timber counties to use measures other than voter-approved property taxes to pay for public safety. Gov. John Kitzhaber is expected to sign the bill that would allow him to declare a public safety emergency that would allow counties to impose an income tax or other assessments.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s timber harvest last year was up 36 percent from its 2009 recession low. The state Department of Forestry says the harvest increased a third straight year to 3.75 billion board feet. The 2009 harvest was 2.75 billion board feet. A Forestry Department economist says the increase is due to a strong export market and improving housing starts in the United States.

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) – An Oregon woman charged with murder is returning to a Michigan courtroom to learn if she’ll face a trial in her mother’s death. The body of 89-year-old Mary Grenia of Salem was found behind a thrift store in Port Huron Township in March. Her 49-year-old daughter, Kelly Rhodes, also from Salem, is charged with the death. A medical examiner said neglect may have contributed to Grenia’s death
