SEATTLE (AP) – Starling Marte hit two of Pittsburgh’s five home runs and Jeff Locke pitched seven sharp innings to lead the Pirates past the Seattle Mariners 9-4 last night. Marte opened the game with a triple and hit solo shots in the second and eighth for the first multihomer game of his career. Locke limited Seattle to two runs and four hits.

SEATTLE (AP) – Oft-injured Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring yesterday, two days after coming off the 60-day DL for the same thing. The 30-year-old Gutierrez has played in just 18 games this season. Dustin Ackley was called up from Triple-A Tacoma as Gutierrez’s replacement.

SUNRIVER, Ore. (AP) – Mark Sheftic birdied the final two holes yesterday at rainy Sunriver Resort for a share of the third-round lead in the PGA Professional National Championship. The 38-year-old Sheftic, a PGA teaching pro at Merion in Ardmore, Pa., shot a 1-under 71 at Crosswater Club to match playing partner Chip Sullivan at 8-under 207. The top 20 finishers today will earn spots in the PGA Championship in August at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The city of Anchorage has formed an exploratory committee to help determine whether it should bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The 23-member committee, which includes four Alaska Olympians, held its organizational meeting yesterday. Mayor Dan Sullivan says he wants the committee to finish its work within eight months.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Ducks will learn today if the NCAA intends to impose any possible recruiting violations against the school’s football program. The NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions will release a public report on the findings of its investigation of payments Oregon made to recruiting services, including $25,000 to Houston-based Complete Scouting Services in 2011.
