SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A second day of budget talks between Oregon’s governor and legislative leaders failed to produce a compromise. A spokesman for Gov. Democrats have been trying to get new tax revenue approved while Republicans want steeper cuts to public-employee pensions.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state parole board says it will reconsider its decision to release an Oregon man who killed a John Day police officer in 1992. The Oregon Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision said yesterday that Sidney Porter will not be released June 7 as previously scheduled. The decision to release Porter has angered the law-enforcement community and drew a letter from Gov. John Kitzhaber asking them to reconsider.

ALOHA, Ore. (AP) – A May 23 town house fire in the community of Aloha has claimed a second life. The Oregonian reports the medical examiner’s office says 11-year-old Tengyuan Huo died Monday at a Portland hospital. The boy’s father, 34-year-old Gang Huo, died last week at a different hospital.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland’s city flag will be lowered today for a newborn girl found dead at a recycling center last week. The City Council approved a resolution in 2009 to lower the flag in honor of children who die from abuse, neglect, or homicidal violence. Police are still investigating the baby’s death.
