KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – Police have arrested seven men suspected of involvement in the death of an Oregon pastor at his Malaysian home. The body of Rev. David Ginter was found bound with cloth Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s main city, on May 4. District police said today that they detained seven men this week, including a few believed to have personally known Ginter. Ginter’s church website says he was from outside Portland. He came to Malaysia in 2010.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon official says a man brought a pressure cooker he claimed was a bomb into the state Teacher Standards and Practices Commission office in Salem yesterday and told employees he had tried to blow up their sign because it was misspelled. The sign that troubled him spells out the agency’s name and sits at the end of its parking lot. One side of the sign is missing a letter. Police said the pressure cooker was not a bomb, and they arrested 50-year-old Leonard Burdek for investigation of disorderly conduct.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say a bullet fired by a man who says he was cleaning his rifle in his home traveled through a wall and hit a 17-year-old girl in a neighboring unit. Sgt. Pete Simpson said the teen suffered a non-life-threatening leg wound last evening and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Simpson says officers took the man into custody for further investigation and seized the rifle as evidence.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A retired Portland police officer with “bird whispering” skills responded last night after a young Red-tailed hawk was found wandering in a downtown park. Officers who first located the bird reported it appeared to be in some sort of distress. They couldn’t immediately reach anyone with the Audubon Society so they called retired Officer Tom James, who was able to capture the hawk and get it into a secure cage. Police planned to take the hawk to the Audubon Society for treatment.
