PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 23-year-old man accused of trying to open an emergency exit during his plane’s descent into Portland International Airport is set to make his first court appearance. An FBI spokeswoman says passengers and crew aboard the Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Portland told investigators that Alexander Michael Herrera made “unusual statements” before trying to open the door yesterday morning. KGW-TV reports passengers used shoelaces and seat-belt extensions to restrain him.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – Classmates of an Oregon teenager accused of planning to blow up his school say the 17-year-old had discussed bomb-making, but never mentioned an attack plot. West Albany High School student Thomas Stone told KATU-TV that he didn’t think much about Grant Acord’s talk a couple weeks ago. Acord is being charged as an adult with attempted aggravated murder.

JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon House Judiciary Committee will convene a hearing this afternoon on why the state Board of Parole is granting release next month to a man convicted of killing a John Day police officer in 1992. Lawmakers tell The Oregonian that two decades in prison doesn’t seem sufficient for Sidney Porter, who was convicted of fatally beating Officer Frank Ward.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A suspect arrested by the Portland SWAT team after a standoff inside a home will be arraigned today on multiple charges of domestic violence. Sgt. Pete Simpson says 33-year-old Jordan Sterling Willis peacefully surrendered yesterday and a woman also inside left without injury.
