WESTFIR, Ore. (AP) – The city recorder in a town of about 250 people in Lane County has been arrested on a theft charge after the city hired a forensic auditor to investigate discrepancies in its finances. The Eugene Register-Guard reports that 51-year-old Deanna Cape had been convicted in 2008 of theft in Lane County. Westfir Mayor Robert DeHarpport said the conviction didn’t show up in a background check two years ago. He says the audit began after residents asked why their water and sewer payments weren’t processed on time.

GREENVILLE, Calif. (AP) – At least 22 aftershocks have struck following an earthquake in far northeastern California that was felt as far away as Oregon. There have been no reports of injury or serious damage. Officials say the magnitude-5.7 quake broke dishes and shook mirrors when it hit at 8:47 last night 25 miles southwest of Susanville. It was followed by multiple aftershocks, including a magnitude 4.9 temblor early this morning.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The head of Multnomah County’s health department was arrested on an accusation of domestic violence, but her husband declined to press charges. Lillian Shirley allegedly bit her husband Monday evening, hours after he had asked for a divorce in an e-mail. The 65-year-old Shirley has led the county health department since 1999.

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (AP) – The London Knights beat the host Saskatoon Blades 6-1 last night in the Memorial Cup tiebreaker game. London will face the Portland Winterhawks in the semifinal tonight, with the winner advancing to play the Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday night in the Canadian Hockey League title game.
