HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say no charges are expected against a minivan driver who struck and killed a woman walking on a rural Washington County highway. The driver told police he was traveling about 55 mph south of Hillsboro when the woman, wearing all black, appeared in front of his car. He said he was unable to avoid her.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge says a man who claims he suffered a broken elbow and ribs during a 2010 arrest can proceed with a lawsuit against law enforcement officers in Yamhill County. The 48-year-old was a passenger in a car stopped because of a suspected drunken driver. He asked to walk home, and the lawsuit says an assisting officer searched him without cause, threw him to the ground and beat him. He was acquitted of resisting arrest.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portlanders who are often in lockstep as liberals have been breaking away from polite conversation to fight about whether to fluoridate the water. Tomorrow’s election has drawn heavy attention as liberals concerned about the dental health of low-income children are pitted against liberals averse to putting anything unnecessary in the water.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A Vancouver, Wash.-based group dedicated to preserving land near the Columbia River has opened a new office in Hood River, Ore. By opening the Hood River office, the Columbia Land Trust is trying to have a more visible presence in an area that has become a key part of its restoration and conservation efforts.
