SEATTLE (AP) – The Sacramento Kings’ future may finally be decided. The NBA Board of Governors will meet today in Dallas to possibly resolve the tug of war over the Kings between a group in Seattle that wants to move them and a group in Sacramento that wants the franchise to stay put. Seattle investor Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer have raised their offer for the Kings by $75 million and negotiated a backup deal with the Maloof family in an effort to sway the NBA owners.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Nate Tibbetts has joined the Portland Trail Blazers as an assistant coach. The 35-year-old Tibbetts comes to the Blazers after serving for two seasons as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Before that, he spent two seasons as head coach with the NBA D-League’s Tulsa 66ers, the Oklahoma City Thunder affiliate. He replaces Kaleb Canales.
(AP) – A Seattle man trying to dribble a soccer ball 10,000 miles to Brazil in time for the 2014 World Cup has died after being hit by a pickup truck on the Oregon Coast. Police in Lincoln City say 42-year-old Richard Swanson was hit yesterday morning while walking south along U.S. Highway 101 near the city limits. He was declared dead at a hospital. The driver has not been charged.
NEW YORK (AP) – Robinson Cano hit a two-run double, Lyle Overbay delivered a tiebreaking sacrifice fly and the New York Yankees rallied after Felix Hernandez left following a couple of odd twists, beating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 last night. Hernandez exited after six innings with a 3-1 lead, outpitching CC Sabathia in the first matchup between former Cy Young Award winners.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Hit with unprecedented penalties by the Western Hockey League back in November, the Portland Winterhawks not only prevailed, they won the junior hockey league’s championship. The Winterhawks claimed the Ed Chynoweth Cup Sunday with a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings. Thousands of fans came out yesterday as Portland celebrated the title with a noontime rally.
