SCAPPOOSE, Ore. (AP) – The Columbia County sheriff’s office says a 32-year-old registered sex offender kidnapped a woman he met fishing Sunday near Scappoose. Deputies were called Sunday night when witnesses saw the man hit the woman with a vehicle and leave her on a road near Highway 30. KATU reports deputies later arrested Micah Leroy Bills and jailed him on multiple charges, including attempted rape and attempted murder. The woman was taken to a Portland hospital and is expected to survive.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – There’s a stir in the Oregon board that oversees people found guilty of a crime except for insanity. The head of the Psychiatric Security Review Board, Mary Claire Buckley, was placed on paid leave May 2 for an internal investigation. The reason for the investigation was not disclosed. Buckley has been the executive director of the board for more than 20 years.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A federal agency says one of the nation’s largest onion farms will pay $150,000 to settle a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit. The EEOC says a worker at River Point Farms faced verbal abuse from her male supervisor from 2005 to 2010, including unwanted sexual comments and requests for sexual favors. The EEOC says that after the worker’s husband attempted to kill her in 2010, the supervisor blamed her for causing the husband’s arrest and fired her.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Legislature has decided that all gas-powered engines should be banned from Waldo Lake. The Oregon House approved the measure yesterday and sent it to Gov. John Kitzhaber. The bill puts into law a state Marine Board rule banning gas-powered motorboats on the lake in the Cascade Mountains of Central Oregon. It also would ban seaplanes.
