Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Salem animal shelter is taking in dogs from an overcrowded shelter in California. The Willamette Humane Society shelter accepted seven dogs this week from the Riverside County shelter in Southern California. The adoption coordinator in Riverside told the Statesman Journal the dogs available for adoption in Salem would have been euthanized in California.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – New Portland Mayor Charlie Hales wants to decertify the union that represents police commanders. He says they are managers and it doesn’t make sense for them to be in a union. The Oregonian reports the city attorney’s office has filed a petition asking the state Employment Relations Board to clarify the public employee status of the union members. The Portland Police Commanding Officers Association represents 51 commanders, captains and lieutenants.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Several attractions in the Deschutes National Forest south of Bend have opened for the season. The Bulletin reports the Newberry National Volcanic Monument Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte and Lava River Cave will be open on a Thursday through Monday schedule until June 13, when daily operations begin.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A teen driver who was impaled in a crash with a fence in Salem is improving. Authorities feared the 16-year-old had life threatening injuries yesterday when he was hit in the upper chest by a piece of the fence railing. KATU reports he was taken to Salem Hospital where he’s listed in fair condition. Three other teens in the car suffered minor injuries. Police believe they were hill hopping – speeding to get a roller-coaster effect on hills – when the driver lost control and took out about 300 feet of cyclone fencing.
