GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A short break in the weather has allowed a rancher with a helicopter to search a rugged mountainside in southeastern Oregon for a young man inspired by the movie “Into The Wild” to test himself against the wilderness. Harney County Sheriff Dave Glerup said yesterday the rancher saw no trace of Dustin Self, of Piedmont, Okla., who was last heard from a month ago. Glerup says officials hope to search by air again on Saturday, when high winds are expected to die down.

UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) – Rescue boats from the Umatilla County, Ore., sheriff’s office and a rural fire district responded to pluck two fishermen out of the Columbia River near Umatilla after their boat sank. The East Oregonian reports the fishermen were brothers who were both wearing life jackets. The men were rescued after they floated for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A former Oregon teacher who fled after a federal jury found him guilty of possessing child pornography is back in Portland after being found in Mexico. The U.S. Marshals Oregon Fugitive Task Force says 37-year-old Logan Storm is scheduled to appear in federal court this afternoon. The former Beaverton math teacher vanished in late January after cutting off his electronic monitoring bracelet. A judge had allowed Storm to remain out of jail until sentencing.

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) – The father of a gay Oregon teenager from who hanged himself is ready to begin walking across the United States to spread his message against bullying. Joe Bell says it’ll take two years and 5,000 miles, at a rate of 15 to 25 miles a day, to make it to the East Coast. He plans a route through southern states. He’s quit his job with Boise Cascade for the trip, which he’ll do on two artificial knees. He plans to set out Saturday. He and his son, Jadin, had gone to a counselor to report the bullying before the high school sophomore hanged himself in a schoolyard in January. The 15-year-old died two weeks later.
