OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – A 9-year-old girl was shot to death in the back yard of her home at Oregon City. Police say she was hit in the head yesterday afternoon by a bullet fired from inside the home by her mother’s boyfriend who was cleaning a handgun when it accidentally fired. Police say the man is cooperating with investigators.

CLATSKANIE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say one person was killed and seven people – including four children – were injured in a head-on collision yesterday afternoon on Highway 30 west of Clatskanie. Troopers say a car driven by a man crossed the centerline on a curve and collided with the other car head-on. The man later died.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A prolific thief whose crime spree drove up property crime rates in multiple Oregon cities has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. The Oregonian reports Randy Steven Coenen Jr. made a living off stealing from businesses, and after arrests, was quickly released because of jail overcrowding. Police say a burglar such as Coenen can make the state’s property crime rate increase significantly. Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office detective Gil Millett helped tie Coenen to crimes focused on trucks and their cargo in multiple counties.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon House is considering a bill that would require schools to notify parents if students will be screened for depression. Corvallis Democratic Rep. Sara Gelser and others are sponsoring the measure that would require parents to be told their child can opt out of screening. Gelser tells the Albany Democrat-Herald the bill is expected to reach the House floor for a vote this week and should pass.
