SEATTLE (AP) – The man accused of strangling and robbing his grandparents after they welcomed him home from prison pleaded not guilty yesterday in Seattle to two charges of aggravated murder. The King County prosecutor has 30 days to decide whether to seek the death penalty but could ask for more time. Michael Chadd Boysen remains jailed without bail. The 26-year-old is accused of killing 82-year-old Robert Taylor and 80-year-old Norma Taylor after they held a party for him at their Renton home. Boysen was arrested March 12 after a 10-hour standoff at a Lincoln City, Ore., motel where a manager had seen him on the news.
ALOHA, Ore. (AP) – A car struck and fatally injured an 11-year-old girl who was playing in the front yard of her home in the Portland suburb of Aloha. Washington County Sgt. Bob Ray says the Toyota Prius then crashed into the house late yesterday afternoon. The Oregonian reports that the girl died while being taken to a hospital. Ray says the male driver was being questioned.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman says a restaurant bartender was burned last night after alcohol fell on a nearby candle as he made a drink. Fire spokesman Ron Rouse tells The Oregonian the resulting flames ran up a wall at Bluehour in northwest Portland and activated the sprinkler system. The unidentified bartender was burned on the arm and torso as he tried to put out the blaze. He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with first- and second-degree burns.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – About 150 gun-control advocates rallied outside Oregon’s statehouse to show support for legislation that would add new restrictions on carrying and selling firearms. A smaller crowd of gun-rights activists also showed up at the rally yesterday to protest the proposed legislation. The state Senate has introduced four bills that would require background checks on private sales at gun shows, require a shooting test to obtain a concealed-handgun license, and impose restrictions on carrying guns in elementary and secondary schools, as well as public buildings.
