OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Jed Lowrie and Chris Young hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning, helping Tommy Milone and the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 6-2 last night. Nate Freiman had two hits and an RBI in his major league debut as Oakland knocked around Joe Saunders and two relievers after managing just one run and six hits in the first two games of the series. Milone retired 17 of his final 18 batters. Michael Morse had a home run for Seattle, his third in two days.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Mike Conley scored 20 points and the Memphis Grizzlies set a franchise record for wins in a season with a 94-76 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers last night. With four straight wins, Memphis is now 51-24, surpassing its 50-win season in 2003-04. The Grizzlies have already clinched a spot in the playoffs and are jockeying for home-court advantage in the first round. Ex-Blazer Zach Randolph, who played six seasons in Portland from 2001-07, added 17 points and eight boards.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum (bah-TOOM’) was out of the lineup against the Memphis Grizzlies due to an injured right shoulder. Batum has a labral tear in his shoulder, causing him decreased strength and sensation. He apparently sustained the injury on Monday in Portland’s 112-102 loss to Utah. Batum is averaging 14.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season for the Trail Blazers, who are effectively out of the playoffs. He’ll be reevaluated tomorrow.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas freshman guard Anrio Adams had been granted a release to transfer to another school. Coach Bill Self says he met with Adams and believes it is in his best interest to look for a school closer to his Seattle home. Adams played in 24 games last season, averaging 3.5 minutes per game and scoring 27 points. His season high was 11 points against Texas Tech in the Big 12 tournament. Adams said he believes playing closer to home is better for him and his family.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks have officially announced the signing of free agent defensive tackle Tony McDaniel and the re-signing of restricted free agent Clinton McDonald. Seattle had tendered a one-year qualifying offer to McDonald, who chose to sign and return as Seattle’s backup nose tackle. McDaniel played in 54 games with Miami since going to the Dolphins in 2009 via a trade with Jacksonville. McDaniel was mostly a reserve with the Dolphins, starting just two games.
