EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A judge has sentenced a Eugene man to 50 years in prison after convicting him on sex abuse charges involving six young girls. Circuit Court Judge Charles Zennaché found 50-year-old Russell Crummett guilty of 12 charges Wednesday. The Register-Guard reports Crummett will have no chance for early release. The defense plans to appeal the convictions. The prosecution says Crummett was a single father whose own child attended school with the victims and they became friends.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A retired Deschutes County sheriff’s captain accidentally shot himself in a hand at the sheriff’s firearms range in Millican, east of Bend. The sheriff’s office says Randy Wight had completed his annual qualification yesterday and was disassembling his 9 mm pistol for cleaning when a round in the chamber fired. Gun range staff and other retired officers provided first aid before Wright was treated and released from a hospital.

TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – A man cleaning a gun in a Troutdale apartment accidentally fired a shot that nearly hit a woman in her apartment next door. Police say the woman was hit in the head by drywall debris yesterday but she did not need hospital treatment. KGW reports the bullet ended up in a third apartment where nobody was home. Gun owner Lawrence Wach faces a reckless endangerment charge.

POWELL BUTTE, Ore. (AP) – A Canyon City man and wife are not seriously injured after the cars they were driving collided on Highway 126 near Powell Butte. Crook County deputies tell KTVZ Julie Reynolds was following Dennis Reynolds. She was in her car. He was in his pickup truck. He stopped for traffic. She didn’t.
