SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Chemeketa Community College is working with a group to manage a free-roaming colony of cats that live in a wooded area on campus. The Statesman Journal says Salem Friends of Felines has been feeding, trapping, and neutering and spaying the cats for the past two years. In February, the college found and disposed of cat shelters and feeding stations. After an outcry from the cat caretakers, the college replaced the shelters and stations for the feral felines.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A fight over an 83-year-old Pendleton Round-Up costume is headed to the Oregon Supreme Court. The fringed leather skirt and vest was worn by rodeo queen Lois McIntyre in 1930. She died in 1964. Her family agreed to display the costume in the Pendleton Round-Up Hall of Fame. In 2000 her family learned the outfit was in the possession of another former rodeo queen who refused to give it up. The Oregonian reports the outfit is believed to be worth $25,000. The state supreme court will hear the case in September.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police says troopers don’t call you, demanding payment for traffic tickets. Police say scammers claiming to be with the OSP have been placing recorded phone calls to some people in Oregon. The calls may begin with a siren sound. They ask for a specific amount of money for a traffic ticket and say it should be paid by phone using a reloadable debit card. State Police say these calls are fraudulent and should be ignored.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – About 200 people turned out for a rally last night in Portland in support of gay marriage. The Oregonian reports that the rally also drew Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum. The U.S. Supreme Court this week dove into a historic debate on gay rights that could soon lead to resumption of same-sex marriage in California. The court’s first major examination of gay rights in 10 years continues today.
