Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

PROVO, Utah (AP) – Tyler Haws scored 37 points and Brandon Davies added 22 points to lead Brigham Young to a 90-79 win over Washington in the first round of the NIT last night. Matt Carlino also added 20 points, 18 in the second half, for BYU. C.J. Wilcox led Washington with 20 points, while Shawn Kemp Jr. added 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Huskies led 35-33 at the half, but the Cougars used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to break away from a 45-45 tie. Washington finished at 18-16.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Brandon Jennings scored 24 points and Monta (MAHN’-tay) Ellis added 21 to help the Milwaukee Bucks hang on for a 102-95 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers last night. Ellis added nine rebounds, eight assists, three steals and matched a career high with three blocks for Milwaukee, which outscored Portland 31-8 in the second quarter – the Trail Blazers’ fewest points in any period this season. The Blazers shot a woeful 2 for 20 from the field and had six turnovers in the quarter.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) – San Francisco’s Barry Zito looked as if he was in regular-season form and Seattle pitcher Brandon Maurer stayed in contention for a rotation spot as the Mariners beat the Giants 6-3. Zito threw struck out five over the first and second innings and gave up two runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out seven overall. Maurer, a 22-year-old with no experience above Double-A, held the Giants to a run on three hits in five innings. He also struck out four without walking anyone.

(AP) – Oregon State coach Mike Riley is getting ready for spring practice and looking to build on the success of last season. The Beavers went from a 3-9 record in 2011 to 9-4 and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. They’ll open spring practice April 1 and conclude with the annual spring game April 26. Oregon State has not been able to play an actual spring “game” the past several seasons because of injuries and absences. But this year the Beavers are fairly healthy and might be able to offer more than just a glorified practice for the televised event. They will, however, have to do it without some familiar faces from last season.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The asphyxiation death of a dog dropped from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has outraged animal rights activists who have long criticized the 1,000-mile race as cruel. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is urging Alaska prosecutors to file cruelty charges for those responsible for the death of 5-year-old Dorado, who died after being buried by drifting snow at a checkpoint. The dog was found dead Friday morning in Unalakleet, 260 miles from the finish line in Nome.
