LAS VEGAS (AP) – Scott Suggs scored 19 points, C.J. Wilcox added 11 and Washington held off a furious rally by rival Washington State for a 64-62 win in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament last night in Las Vegas. Washington appeared to be headed toward a rout, but blew a 15-point lead with 8½ minutes left. The sixth-seeded Huskies went 8 minutes without a field goal as Washington State scored 15 straight points to tie it. Brock Motum led Washington State with 28 points; D.J. Shelton had 19.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Spencer Dinwiddie scored 20 points and Colorado picked up a much-needed win at the Pac-12 tourney, holding off Oregon State 74-68 in the first round yesterday. Colorado needed a couple of wins in Las Vegas to boost its NCAA chances and got off to a good start by dominating Oregon State defensively most of the second half. Roberto Nelson scored 20 points, and Eric Moreland had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Oregon State, which had knocked off Washington in last year’s event.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Ervin Santana struck out seven in four innings, Billy Butler and Salvador Perez hit run-singles and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 yesterday to improve their spring training record to 14-2. Santana, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels during the offseason, allowed his only run on Carlos Truinfel’s third-inning homer. Santana gave up two hits and threw 35 of 53 pitches for strikeouts. Seattle has lost four straight and six of seven after a 10-game winning streak.

SEATTLE (AP) – A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that free agent defensive end Cliff Avril and the Seattle Seahawks have reached agreement on a deal that addresses one of Seattle’s big offseason concerns. The agreement was reached yesterday and is still pending a physical. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the deal. NFL.com first reported the deal. Avril had 9½ sacks last season for Detroit and 11 in 2011.

NOME, Alaska (AP) – Last year, the youngest musher ever to win Alaska’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race said his 25-year-old stamina gave him the advantage. Just one year later, Dallas Seavey’s own father proved youth doesn’t always win out. Using careful strategy and an all-out sprint to the finish, 53-year-old Mitch Seavey became the oldest winner ever of the grueling, 1,000-mile race. He crossed the finish line Tuesday night in Nome. A few dozen mushers remained on the trail yesterday.
