EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Supreme Court hears arguments today from lawyers for a death-row inmate who wants to be executed and the governor who refuses to let him die. Gov. John Kitzhaber — who opposes capital punishment — regretted letting two other inmates be put to death and says he won’t allow it to happen again. A lawyer for Gary Haugen will argue that Kitzhaber exceeded his authority when he issued a temporary reprieve for the two-time murderer in 2011, delaying the execution until the governor leaves office.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The City Council members have voted unanimously to make Portland the fourth U.S. city to mandate that businesses offer sick leave, requiring employers to give workers up to five days of sick leave each year. Portland’s new policy says employees can earn one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked and businesses with at least six workers must offer paid sick leave. Smaller companies can provide unpaid time off.
PHILOMATH, Ore. (AP) – In the Willamette Valley town Philomath, residents have been told that those mobile basketball hoops should be moved off streets and sidewalks when not in use. City Manager Randy Kugler tells the Corvallis Gazette-Times that a person was injured tripping over the base of one of the self-supporting backboards. The city is worried about liability.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – Almost 70 years after a World War II airman from crashed in the jungle, his family will bury him in a Pendleton cemetery. The East Oregonian reports that Ray Thompson was a 25-year-old staff sergeant for the Army Air Corps when his plane went down in Papua New Guinea. In 1973, 2002 and 2008, wreckage and remains of the 10 airmen were found at three different sites. DNA testing identified some of the bones as Thompson’s.
