SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber will brief other state leaders this weekend on his plan to lower Medicaid costs, touting an overhaul that President Barack Obama highlighted in his State of the Union address for its potential to lower the deficit even as health care expenses climb. The Oregon Democrat leaves for Washington, D.C., today to pitch his plan that changes the way doctors and hospitals are paid and improves health care coordination for low income residents so that treatable medical problems don’t grow in severity or expense. Kitzhaber says his goal is to win over a handful of other governors from each party.

HONOLULU (AP) – A federal grand jury has indicted a Hawaii man on charges he lied to authorities when he said a possible hijacker was aboard an Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle. Timothy David Hershman faces up to five years in prison if convicted. Last month the FBI said a caller reported a possible hijacker aboard a Jan. 17 flight from Kailua-Kona. The Oregon Air National Guard had to scramble two F-15 jets to escort the flight to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Authorities later said the call was a hoax.

WILSONVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a man was walking on the shoulder of Interstate 5 south of Portland when he appeared to run into the travel lanes. He was hit by a truck and critically injured. Police identified the man hurt yesterday as 26-year-old Joren Moon Love of Portland. Senior Trooper Dan Swift said the freeway’s southbound lanes were temporarily closed while a helicopter ambulance landed to pick up the man. He was taken to a Portland hospital. The driver is cooperating.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A wildlife veterinarian says a bald eagle rescued after it had been struck by a car on Interstate 84 in Oregon had to be euthanized because of its injuries. Wildlife Care Center veterinarian Deb Sheaffer tells KGW-TV that a scan showed a fractured vertebra and a blood clot pushing on the bird’s spinal cord, which resulted in permanent paralysis. She said yesterday the eagle couldn’t have survived either in captivity or in the wild. Portland firefighters helped rescue the bird Wednesday.
