PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A small earthquake in Southwest Washington shook parts of metropolitan Portland yesterday. The U.S. Geological Survey says the 3.7 magnitude quake struck just after 5:00 last night and was centered near Amboy, Wash., about 20 miles north of Vancouver. No damage was reported. An hour after the quake, more than 900 people had told the USGS they felt it. Krissy Barber of Gresham, Ore., told KATU-TV that it felt like everyone in her apartment building slammed their doors in unison, and the couch continued to shake for several seconds. And a Vancouver couple said the quake was “very forceful.”
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A former Hillsboro, Ore., police officer accused of exchanging gunfire with 10 Washington County officers at his home has been indicted on 26 counts including multiple charges of attempted aggravated murder. The Oregonian reports that 46-year-old Timothy Cannon was arraigned Wednesday. In addition to attempted murder, assault and harassment, he’s charged with aggravated animal abuse – accused of killing a cat. Cannon’s wife Lisa and the 10 officers are listed as victims.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The terrorism trial of an Oregon man has gone to the jury. Attorneys spent six hours making closing arguments yesterday in the trial of Mohamed Mohamud, who is accused of attempting to detonate a bomb at Portland’s 2010 Christmas tree-lighting. The trial began Jan. 10 and included testimony from undercover agents, former CIA officers and Mohamud’s parents. The supposed bomb was a fake supplied by the FBI. Prosecutors contend he was predisposed to terrorism.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A family friend of an Eastern Oregon teenager who tried to commit suicide says the boy had recently been bullied because he is gay. Bud Hill told The Oregonian newspaper he wouldn’t say bullying was the whole cause of the attempt, but it was a “contributor.” The 15-year-old boy tried to hang himself Jan. 19. A spokesman at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland said late yesterday afternoon that the teen remains in critical condition. A vigil for him was held last week.
