SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Three women accused of neglecting more than 100 dogs were led off to jail in handcuffs yesterday after court appearances where their bail was set at $75,000. The Statesman Journal reports they’re scheduled for more court hearings Friday or Monday. The three are leaders of Willamette Animal Rescue, which tries to find homes for dogs that otherwise would be killed. They were arrested after a Jan. 13 raid on a warehouse in Brooks where the dogs were found injured and malnourished. The dogs are recovering with the help of donations to the Marion County Dog Shelter and Willamette Human Society.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police believe alcohol was a factor in a fatal crash early this morning in Portland. A car struck a utility pole in the Richmond neighborhood, killing a 37-year-old passenger. The 49-year-old driver was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 42-year-old Corbett man who pleaded no contest to drunken driving, hit-and-run and manslaughter charges in the death of a motorcycle rider has been sentenced to more than six years in prison. Investigators said Brian Leymaster was speeding and unable to stay in his lane last August when his vehicle struck and killed 60-year-old Gar Riggs of Sandy. The Oregonian reports Leymaster went home after the crash but his horrified wife drove him back to the scene to turn himself in.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A man who attacked an 84-year-old Eugene woman in her home last July pleaded guilty yesterday to robbery, burglary and sexual abuse. Thirty-two-year-old Jackie Griffin Harpole was sentenced in Lane County Circuit Court to 23 years in prison. The Register-Guard reports he was arrested in November in Mississippi.
