PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The stretch of I-84 in rural Oregon where a tour bus crashed yesterday is so notorious that highway officials have published a specific advisory warning of its dangers. Nine people were killed and more than two dozen injured when the bus veered out of control on snow- and ice-covered pavement near the start of a 7-mile section of road called Deadman Pass. Drivers are warned that snow and black ice are common in the fall through the spring.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – Vancouver police say two kayakers associated with a body found in Columbia River are missing. The Oregonian reports a vehicle owned by one of the people was found in Oregon at a place where people frequently launch kayaks.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Lane County Sheriff’s Deputy who was severely injured while vacationing in Mexico has returned to Oregon. The county says Drew Wattier was moved to a long-term care facility in Portland last week from San Diego, where his wife Michelle remains.The Register Guard reports the couple were hit by a speeding car outside their hotel Nov. 30. The driver fled.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The National Guard in Pendleton expects to launch unmanned air vehicles soon out of the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport to train its 23-troop platoon. The East Oregonian says city officials are optimistic the high-tech industry could bring jobs to Pendleton and fill properties on airport land. The Oregon Army National Guard said it’s waiting for FAA approval to fly the so-called drones at the airport.
