PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Transportation wants to create a wetland along Highway 101 near Seaside to ease flooding on the highway. The Oregonian reports the wetland will serve as a water storage area to hold heavy rains. The highway has been flooded four times already this year by big rains that coincide with high tides. A levy would have to be removed to create the wetland.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – State Treasurer Ted Wheeler plans to ask the Oregon Legislature for authority to hire more investment managers to replace some of the Wall Street consultants now handling portions of the state pension fund. The Salem Statesman Journal reports that Wheeler thinks state workers could do the same work for less money, saving the fund about $12 million a year.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A fire early today at a Hillsboro apartment building was extinguished by automatic sprinklers. Hillsboro Fire and Rescue says the person living in the second-floor apartment where the fire started was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation. Investigators determined the fire at the Rolling Green Apartments was caused by an electric wheelchair.

REDMOND, Ore. (AP) – A former Redmond High School student is attending college this fall after almost being killed by an electric shock in May. The jolt knocked Kyle Reed unconscious and doctors feared he would suffer brain damage if he survived. Doctors tell the Bend Bulletin that Reed’s his 6-foot-3, 220-pound size helped. Friends and family say he’s back to normal now, although he still doesn’t remember the accident.
