CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Three Oregon State University students lost their belongings in a fire that burned the house where they were living in Corvallis. Fire officials say the house was heavily involved in flames when they arrived last night. The three students escaped safely.

GLADSTONE, Ore. (AP) – Searchers have recovered the body of a man from the Willamette River at Gladstone where he had tried to swim ashore after his pickup truck was stranded on a sandbar. The body of Thomas Ermini of Milwaukie was found about 75 feet from where he was last seen late Wednesday. Fishermen rescued his girlfriend.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Neighbors of a proposed golf course for the University of Oregon are challenging a county permit for the project, concerned that turf chemicals and water use could harm the surrounding area. Backers of the course need a planning department permit before they begin raising money for the golf course, estimated to cost up to $30 million.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – Nike says it’s reached a deal to sell its Cole Haan brand to private equity firm Apax Partners for $570 million. The Beaverton-based company said in May that it wanted to sell the leather shoe division and its Umbro soccer jersey brand as part of its plan to cut costs and focus on its core brands: Nike, Jordan, Converse and Hurley.
