JEFFERSON, Ore. (AP) – A four-alarm fire early this morning has burned the Columbia Spas business in Jefferson, about 10 miles south of Salem. Flames and multiple explosions threatened a nearby mobile home park, so Marion County sheriff’s deputies evacuated residents to a Red Cross shelter set up at Jefferson High School. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The number of Oregon students living in a homeless situation fell slightly the past school year. State education officials say 20,370 students were homeless at some point during the 2011-12 academic year – 175 fewer than the year before. The Beaverton, Portland and Medford school districts had the highest number of homeless students, more than 1,200 each.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s public universities had a record number of graduates last school year. The Oregonian reports there were more than 20,000 in 2011-2012. Officials say that large numbers of Oregonians went to college during the Great Recession. They also say that larger numbers of community college students are making the leap to four-year schools and getting degrees.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says a person of interest has been identified in the fatal shooting at a Salem bar. The Statesman Journal reports the person was arrested on unrelated charges. The person was not identified yesterday. Authorities say Justin De La Rosa was fatally shot at the Shooters Cafe & Saloon on Saturday.
