HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a regional police task force busted a Texas-based burglary ring that periodically flew into the Portland area to commit waves of burglaries. The Washington County sheriff’s office says burglars would rent cars, buy tools and break into homes when they suspected no one was home. They focused on stealing gold, which was easy to sell in Texas. Three people have been arrested and a fourth is believed to be hiding in Vancouver, B.C.
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A crane removed a car that crashed onto the MAX tracks late last night in Beaverton. The crash also knocked a tree onto the tracks. Police arrested the driver, a 27-year-old Vancouver, Wash., man on drunken driving and reckless driving charges.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland City Council votes today on a negotiated settlement with the Justice Department on police reforms. Federal investigators found in September that police engaged in a pattern of excessive force against people with mental illness. Mayor Sam Adams told The Oregonian he’d like to implement reforms as soon as possible.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A helicopter speeds up the Christmas tree harvesting at the Noble Mountain Tree Farm near Salem. General manager Bob Schaefer tells the Statesman Journal a helicopter has harvested as many as 14,000 Christmas trees in one day. Noble Mountain is one of the largest Christmas tree growers in the state, and Oregon is one of the top-producing states in the nation with 65,000 acres.
