SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Supreme Court says it will decide whether a death row inmate can refuse the governor’s reprieve. Gary Haugen says he wants to die and has stopped appealing his aggravated murder conviction, but Gov. John Kitzhaber has vowed there will be no executions while he is governor. He issued the reprieve in November of last year.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The Eugene City Council has approved a ban on plastic bags. The Register-Guard reports the bag ban will take effect in six months. The ordinance requires retailers to charge a minimum of 5 cents for each paper bag dispensed in place of plastic bags. Councilor Alan Zelenka says that’s an incentive to switch to reusable bags.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The man killed by Salem police Sunday evening had a criminal history that included possession of methamphetamine and driving under the influence of intoxicants. The Statesman Journal reports that police identified the man as 27-year-old Chase Hammer of Salem. Police say he refused orders to drop the gun and was shot and died at the scene.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Astoria man already serving a six-year sentence for child sexual abuse has been sentenced in federal court in Portland for a child pornography conviction. Forty-nine-year-old Byron Lee Newton pleaded guilty to the child pornography charge. He’s been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, to be served after his state sentence.
