NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – Voters in Rhode Island, Oregon and Maryland will decide Nov. 6 whether to expand their states’ gambling offerings as states continue to turn to casinos and slot parlors for economic development and badly needed revenue. The three states have scheduled casino-related gambling ballot questions. But a push in Oregon to build a casino near Portland appears dead after backers announced they don’t expect voters to approve their ballot question. Forty states now authorize casinos, slot parlors or tribal gambling facilities.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Police in Medford, Ore., are investigating the death of a 58-year-old cab driver who was found dead in a field Sunday hours after he was reported missing. Police say William Huson, of Talent, died of an apparent homicide, but investigators declined to immediately release the cause of death or the possible motive. Huson last contacted Valley Cab dispatch at about 10:41 Saturday night. He told dispatch he was taking a fare from a restaurant to an unknown address on Vilas Road.

REDMOND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police says a 35-year-old Prineville woman was killed on Highway 126 west of Redmond Saturday night when her motorcycle hit the rear tire of another motorcycle that was slowing down ahead of hers. Sgt. Keith Taylor identified the woman yesterday morning as Crystal Ann Strobl. KTVZ-TV reports she was a wildlife biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in the Prineville office. ODFW spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy in Portland told KTVZ that the department mourns her loss.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Salem Police say one of its officers shot and killed a pit bull as it attacked him Saturday, and a man who apparently tried to intervene was shot in the foot. Lt. Dave Okada says Darren Buchholz and Travis Brossard were interviewing people in a home Saturday when they were attacked by the dog. Okada says Buchholz tried to push the dog away but shot the animal when it continued to attack. The Statesman Journal says 38-year-old Steven Deleon jumped in the middle and was shot in the foot.
