PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – In the year before his arrest, terror suspect Mohamed Mohamud sent more than 11,000 text messages. He was watched by FBI agents, his calls were monitored and his emails were tracked. Now, his defense team wants records of that surveillance, records the government says it’s not required to provide. The defense is seeking to prevent certain evidence from being introduced to a jury at Mohamud’s January trial in connection with an alleged bomb plot.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The trial of an Oregon man accused of murdering his wife and four children has been postponed until next summer. The Mail Tribune newspaper reported yesterday that attorneys for Jordan Criado requested the postponement. They submitted a motion last week to suppress evidence in the case. The charges against Criado carry a potential death penalty.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A wildfire in the Columbia Gorge has closed a trail for bicyclists and hikers and slowed traffic on Interstate 84. The Oregon Department of Forestry says the fire is two miles east of Hood River and burning on about 50 acres in steep terrain. It was reported Tuesday evening. The trail on abandoned highway between Hood River and Mosier has been closed.
MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – Commissioners say they’ll consider reducing the amount of open range in Jefferson County, balancing safety against the interests of ranchers who’d have to put up fences. The Bend Bulletin reports that open range means cattle roam without fences, and ranchers aren’t liable if motorists hit them. Much of Jefferson County outside a few populated areas is deemed open range. The move comes after five trucks on U.S. 97 plowed into a herd of cattle earlier this month, killing 44 head.
