COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – A man accused of taking two Coos Bay girls to a park and giving the marijuana and alcohol has been convicted in Coquille of kidnapping. The World reports Robert Perez wept in court yesterday as he was scheduled to be sentenced Oct.1. The girls, 12 and 13 years old, were found July 9 in North Bend. They said they feared Perez was going to rape them.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Marion County sheriff’s officers have seized two malnourished horses and a foal from a property in Turner and taken the owner into custody. Officers first began working with the horse owner to improve the animals’ condition last January. But yesterday, a deputy found a 14-year-old mare and her 4-month-old foal suffering from extreme malnutrition. A pinto mare was also in poor condition. All the horses are in the care of a rescue group.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland City Council has voted to oppose coal trains moving through the city until the Army Corps of Engineers can evaluate the impact of exporting coal through the Northwest to Asia. The Oregonian reports that Mayor Sam Adams said he opposes “exporting the coal problem to other parts of the world.”

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Hillsboro baseball stadium is set for tomorrow. The 4,500-seat stadium will be home to the minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks that is moving from Yakima, Wash. The stadium will cost $15.2 million and is expected to be ready for the 2013 season. The name of the team will be revealed in a few weeks.
