CLACKAMAS, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County deputies say an argument in the checkout line at a Fred Meyer store turned violent yesterday afternoon and two people were hospitalized, one of them with a gunshot wound. They say the man who was shot suffered a non-life-threatening leg wound. The nature of the other person’s injury was not immediately clear. Detectives anticipate an arrest.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The number of Oregon high schools graduates taking the ACT exam who show they are ready for college is up slightly for the class of 2012. Results released today show 29 percent of the grads who took the exam this year met benchmarks for college readiness in all four subjects – English, reading, math and science. That is up from the 27 percent posted in 2011, and compares to 25 percent nationwide.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Health & Science University has paid a $12,000 fine following the deaths of five monkeys and the escape of nine others from the Oregon National Primate Research Center in 2009. University officials say they agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and paid the fine earlier this year. A group opposed to animal testing called the fine “paltry.”
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A self-proclaimed cat rescue specialist who calls himself “Spider Man” is apparently a tough love kind of guy. KVAL-TV reports that after a Eugene cat named Little Bit was stuck up a tree for more than 48 hours, “Spider Man” arrived and climbed the oak yesterday — with the approval of Eugene police. He used a chainsaw to cut the branch the cat was on, sending the feline 30 feet to the ground where it landed on all fours. The cat’s owner says Little Bit finally made her way home.
