SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon death-row inmate Gary Haugen is heading back to court this week in his bid to carry out his death sentence. Gov. John Kitzhaber granted Haugen an unwanted reprieve on Nov. 22 two weeks before the twice-convicted murderer was to be executed. The Statesman Journal reports a Washington County judge will hear arguments in Haugen’s civil suit tomorrow in Marion County Circuit Court.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – In the next three years, about 400 people on the brink of death in Washington and Oregon will be part of a study for which they did not volunteer. Paramedics responding to unconscious people in cardiac arrest will administer CPR and then shock with a defibrillator. But if that doesn’t work, a paramedic will administer a syringe of either heart-rhythm medications, or saline solution. The Oregonian reports researchers later will check if survival rates differ between the two shots.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland officials say residents who live on the west side of the Willamette River may now drink tap water without boiling it first. City officials yesterday morning lifted a boil water notice after follow-up tests came back negative for bacterial contamination. The boil water notice was issued Saturday.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – Hundreds of people turned out to witness the demolition of a huge recovery boiler at the former Albany Paper Mill. People went to yesterday morning’s implosion of the No. 4 boiler equipped with cameras, tripods, smart phones and video recorders. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports the scrap metal will be sent for reclamation.
