COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Police in Coos Bay say an armed man who barricaded himself in a hotel room has died in an apparent suicide. KVAL says SWAT teams discovered the man’s body when they entered the room yesterday afternoon. Earlier in the day, SWAT officers sent to the Edgewater Inn helped evacuate hotel occupants staying on the same side as the man. Police told KCBY that the man was involved in a stalking investigation, and investigators had gone to the hotel room to question him.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Deschutes (duh-SHOOTS’) County authorities say a 54-year-old man was taken into custody yesterday after he threatened suicide at his La Pine home. Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Tim Leak says Antler Road was closed to traffic while a deputy trained in crisis intervention negotiated with the armed man for about 30 minutes. The man agreed to walk out of his garage with his hands visible. Leak says the man had been in an earlier dispute involving a handgun at a La Pine store.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a 13-year-old boy who disappeared yesterday after a recreational boat sank on the Columbia River near Camas, Wash. Rescue crews from several agencies in Washington state and Oregon spent hours searching for the boy by boat and helicopter. Two adult men in the 18-foot boat, reported to be the boy’s father and grandfather, were rescued by Good Samaritans and treated for exposure.

UNDATED (AP) – Volunteers will play a big role in picking up debris from last year’s tsunami in Japan when it starts hitting the beach in Oregon. Mike Zollitsch, emergency response director for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, says volunteers currently do two big beach cleanups a year organized by the non-profit group SOLVE. He says those volunteers are likely to play a big role when the debris from last year’s tsunami in Japan makes its way across the ocean.
