WASCO, Ore. (AP) – State Police say a 33-year-old Seattle man was killed when his Ferrari collided with an SUV in north-central Oregon. Troopers say the Ferrari driven by Gabriel Pigotti was southbound on U.S. Highway 97 near Wasco yesterday when it crashed into a northbound SUV that was turning left. Troopers say the SUV driver, 90-year-old Peter Macnab of Wasco, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say they arrested a dozen people at a protest yesterday at the University Station post office. Lt. Robert King says the demonstrators had refused to leave and wanted to be arrested. The protesters showed up with two large banners that said, “Occupy the Post Office” and “No Closures! No Cuts!” The Postal Service said last week it’s moving forward with a cost-cutting plan that will close nearly 250 mail processing centers.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A group backed by real-estate agents says it’s submitted more than 160,000 signatures for a ballot measure that would prohibit real-estate transfer taxes in Oregon. The Secretary of State’s Office will review a sample of the signatures for accuracy. More than 116,000 of them must be valid for voters to decide the issue in November.
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – A new study says there are limits to how much well water Klamath Basin irrigators can pump during dry years. The irrigators sharply increased groundwater pumping after a drought in 2001 left them without water diverted from the river. A U.S. Geological Survey study says there’s enough groundwater for to help irrigate in dry years, but the supply has to be managed well.
