GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Several county governments in Oregon timber country are in for tough financial times, whether or not Congress renews federal timber subsidies. But only Josephine County is offering voters a chance to raise taxes to pay for criminal justice and other services. The county has put a four-year sheriff’s levy on the May 15 ballot that would quadruple the county base tax rate to maintain sheriff’s patrols, jail guards, prosecutors and probation officers.

KALAMA, Wash. (AP) – Police in the southwest Washington city of Kalama say a man just hours out of jail led them on a wild car and foot chase that ended with officers using a stun gun and pepper spray to subdue him. Police say Kevin Hamrick of Castle Rock was arrested for investigation of DUI, felony eluding, resisting arrest, and other offenses.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A Los Angeles seafood company is voluntarily recalling its smoked and dry vobla fish because it may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause botulism. Some of the 20-pound boxes were distributed in Oregon. LA Star Seafood Co. said yesterday that the boxes are not vacuum-packed, have no lot numbers and no expiration dates.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Jack Russell terrier that hopped aboard an early morning Portland-area transit bus and went for a ride has been reunited with her owner. TriMet says the dog named Bailey was corralled by a passenger on the No. 12 bus as it traveled Tuesday through Tigard (TY-gard). Soon the dog was featured on the Multnomah County Animal Services website. The Oregonian reports that Bailey’s owner claimed her yesterday.
