SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Tim Duncan scored 18 points and the San Antonio Spurs clinched the top playoff spot in the Western Conference and pushed their win streak to eight, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 124-89 last night. It’s another No. 1 seed for the Spurs, who somehow made this sixth one in the Duncan era even more surprising than getting here last season. Wesley Matthews had 24 points for the Trail Blazers, who lost their sixth straight and have one game left in this tumultuous season.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners will begin a 10-game trip today with the opening contest of a series in Detroit. On Sunday, Alex Rios got three hits and drove in three runs as the Chicago White Sox completed a series sweep of the Seattle Mariners with a 7-4 victory. A day after Phil Humber pitched a perfect game for the White Sox, John Danks went six innings for the win. Seattle has now lost seven of its last 10 games, including four in a row. Detroit is coming off a loss and is 5-5 in its last 10.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 12-year-old Oregon boy who survived a heart attack during basketball practice three months ago has died after collapsing at baseball practice. Fire officials say some of the same paramedics who helped revive Isaac Arzate (ahr-ZAH’-tay) in January rushed to his school Friday and tried again to save him. Marion County Deputy Medical Examiner Rodge Womack said yesterday the Salem boy died at a hospital. Isaac had surgery to repair a heart defect following his Jan. 6 collapse.
