WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. home prices are falling again in most
major cities — but not Portland, one of just a few cities that saw
home prices rise. The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller index shows
prices dropped in September from August in 17 of the 20 cities
tracked. That was the first decline after five straight months
where at least half of the cities in the survey showed monthly
gains.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Health Authority says it plans
to let Portland skip federally mandated water treatment for the
Bull Run watershed. The decision is expected to save water
ratepayers in the area more than $68 million that would have been
needed to build an ultraviolet treatment plant to eliminate
cryptosporidium in the water. The city has argued for years that it
doesn’t need to treat for the potentially lethal parasite,
undetected in the watershed in almost a decade.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – A Banks man who shot a horse in the head and
abandoned it to die has been ordered for spend five additional days
in jail for violating his probation. The Bulletin of Bend reports
prosecutors say Russell Willeford violated probation by deploying
overseas with the Oregon National Guard, failing to get a
court-ordered mental health exam and keeping a pet. The horse
belonged to a camp whose directors told Willeford to find it a new
home. Hunters later found the horse, which had a leg injury and a
left eye hanging out of its socket. The horse survived.
MONROE, Ore. (AP) – The thing to do if a squirrel runs up your
leg is probably not to aim a .22-caliber rifle at it. A Benton
County sheriff’s officer says a Monroe man told deputies he was
startled by a squirrel that ran up his left leg so he shot at it
but hit his foot instead. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that
deputies saw Ethan Bennett at Good Samaritan Regional Medical
Center and learned the story of the gunshot wound. The squirrel was
not shot, and Bennett was treated and released.
