Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
RAINIER, Ore. (AP) – ODOT says a section of U.S. Highway 30 will
be dedicated Monday to a Rainier police chief shot and killed in
January. Transportation officials tell KGW that the “Chief Ralph
Painter Memorial Highway” will stretch from milepost 30 in St.
Helens to milepost 48 in Rainier. Daniel Butts of Kalama, Wash., is
charged with aggravated murder in Painter’s Jan. 5 shooting.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Daimler Trucks North America plans to hire
425 people in Portland, most at a factory headed for closure two
years ago. The company makes Western Star trucks in Portland and
will put on a second shift for the first time since 2006. That will
mean 350 new jobs and put the plant’s work force over 1,000 –
welcome news in a state with unemployment numbers above the
national average. Daimler also plans to hire 75 people at its
nearby corporate headquarters.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Here’s the deal: a Eugene orthodontist says
he’ll fork over a dollar for every pound of candy turned in to his
office right after Halloween. Dr. W. Gray Grieve says he’ll also
contribute another dollar per pound to a nonprofit group that helps
children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or
neglect. Grieve’s goal is 300 pounds of candy. He says he’s betting
many children will choose money over sugar.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Zoo in Portland says one of its
Asian elephants, Rose-Tu, is pregnant for a second time. KGW
reports that zoo officials say the calf is due in December 2012.
Rose-Tu is also the mother of 3-year-old Samudra. The father in
both cases is a 40-year-old bull elephant named Tusko.
