Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – After meeting with Gov. John Kitzhaber,
two top Oregon Lottery officials say they’ll postpone the launch of
a new Internet game site called The ORcade. The governor told the
officials yesterday he was concerned that the website’s cartoon
graphics and online games could appeal to minors. The Oregonian
reports that the decision comes after criticism that the website
smacks of the 1980s “Joe Camel” cigarette ad campaign that ended
after complaints it was aimed at youngsters.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A Vancouver, Wash., couple is accused of
imprisoning their adopted twins and only feeding them once a day.
Vancouver Police tell The Columbian Jeffrey and Sandra Weller are
charged with five counts of second-degree assault and two counts of
unlawful imprisonment. The 16-year-old twins have been placed in
protective custody. The emaciated twins told police that as far
back as they can remember food has been locked up in their house.

ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Ashland is known for its Shakespeare
festival and as the home of Southern Oregon University. Some city
residents know it as a place in the mountains where they have to
build fences 6 to 12 feet high to keep the deer out of the
vegetables – or give up gardening. The city hasn’t yet proposed a
plan to reduce deer numbers, but they are trying to figure out
whether the population is actually increasing. Last week,
volunteers took a census that found 186 and probably missed some.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Country Natural Beef cooperative says
it’s having trouble filling orders because high prices are luring
some producers back to traditional sales outlets. The co-op —
which began in Eastern Oregon — hopes consumers will pay a premium
for meat raised under strict guidelines, telling the Capital Press
it’s been able to buy cattle that meet its specifications so it can
supply retailers. But that’s costly and so are added requirements
from some retailers for new third-party certifications of animal
care practices and sustainable production.
