UNDATED (AP) – Crews are working to keep a wildfire on Mount
Hood inside a wilderness area and away from the water supply for
Portland. Firefighters are trying to build containment lines before
winds kick up as forecast on Wednesday. Winds of 15 to 20 mph, with
gusts up to 30 mph, are expected. The 4,500-acre fire was three
miles east of Bull Run Watershed yesterday. A fire spokesman says
officials expect the blaze to miss the watershed and nearby
Bonneville Power Administration high-voltage transmission lines,
but crews are building contingency lines.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland fire officials say two brothers
who drowned while swimming at Kelley Point Park at the confluence
of the Willamette and Columbia rivers were rescued at the same spot
nearly two months ago. Rescue crews say 24-year-old Kissan Kumar
and his 21-year-old brother Ram drowned Monday. The Oregonian
reports the brothers were the same men that were rescued with two
others on July 10 in the same area.

ELGIN, Ore. (AP) – A grand jury has found that an Elgin police
officer was justified in the Aug. 1 fatal shooting of a 60-year-old
man during a domestic disturbance call. Union County District
Attorney Tim Thompson says Oregon Department of Justice findings
after an investigation by the Union County Major Crime Team were
consistent with Richard Shafer holding a rifle when he was shot.
His wife said her husband was shot while unarmed.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Multnomah County’s top prosecutor says he
won’t run for another term as district attorney, a position Michael
Schrunk has held since January 1981. Schrunk tells The Oregonian
he’ll endorse a chief deputy district attorney, Rod Underhill, to
replace him. The newspaper said yesterday that Underhill is
expected to announce this week that he’ll seek the job.
